Virgil Jarnagin Sr.

GREENVILLE -- Funeral services for Virgil Jarnagin Sr., 87, of Greenville were at 2 p.m. today at Smith Funeral Home, Greenville. He died June 9, 2009, at Delta Regional Medical Center, Greenville. Burial was in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens, Greenville.

Mr. Jarnagin was born June 17, 1921, in Minden, La., to Henry and Marnie [sic Mamie] Jarnagin. He grew up in Minden where he attended school. He moved to the Mississippi Delta at a young age where he had lived since. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Greenville. He was a retired employee of Lewis Grocer Co. and a former employee of Grenada Farms Dairy for many years. He was also a past member and officer of the Woodmen of the World fraternal organization. He was an avid outdoorsman, especially enjoying hunting and fishing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

He is survived by his son, Virgil Jarnagin Jr. and his wife, Annette, of Oakland; two daughters, Patricia ``Trisha'' Jarnagin Thompson hand her husband, Rueban, of Olive Branch and Sharon Jarnagin Ashmore and her husband, James ``Butch,'' of Lake Village, Ark.; five grandchildren, Senior Master Sgt. Shawn Jarnagin (Rose) of the U.S. Air Force stationed in Germany, Angie Jarnagin Burchett (Mike) of Denton, Texas, William Thompson (Kris) of Phoenix, Ariz., Emily Thompson Kimmer (Greg) of LaGrange, Ky., and Tammy Ashmore Boothe (Tommy) of Lebanon, Tenn.; eight great-grandchildren; and a special friend, Katherine Kilby of Greenville.

The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to First Baptist Church Renovation Fund, Greenville; Church of the Holy Apostle Episcopal Church, Discretionary Fund, Collierville, Tenn.; or The American Heart Association.

The family would like to thank the staff at Washington Care in Greenville for their attentive and compassionate care.

Visitation was at 1 p.m. at the funeral home.

The Rev. James Nichols officiated the services.
