VIRGINIA MAE FOSTER CORLEY
Mrs. Virginia Mae “Totsy” Foster Corley, age 104 of Houston, passed away Saturday, April 27, 2002 in the Manor Care Sharpstown Nursing Home in Houston. Mrs. Corley was born January 18, 1898 in Crockett and moved to Houston after her marriage to Hickman Corley, December 27, 1924 and lived there until her death. Mrs. Corley was a volunteer nurse in World War I and knitted socks for the servicemen overseas. Mrs. Corley was a homemaker and was an accomplished seamstress, sewing all of her daughter's clothes including her wedding dress. Mrs. Corley was an excellent cook, making many loaves of homemade bread for all of her family and when she was 99 years old, she made over 150 tamales for a family dinner. Mrs. Corley made bunnies for the Warwick Hotel in Houston and was also an accomplished pianist. Mrs. Corley was a loving, unselfish, and devoted Mother for her two children and touched the lives of her family and all who knew her in her own special way. Mrs. Corley was a devoted Christian, loving the Lord with all of her heart and was a member of the St. Paul's Methodist Church-Houston.
Survivors include daughter Virginia Mae Hamblet and husband James Green, of Houston; grandsons James Green Hamblet, Jr. and wife Bonnie, of Jackson, Melton Glen Hamblet, of Houston; granddaughters Diana Leigh Brand and husband John, and Cecille Hinton, all of San Diego, CA.; grandson Glen Hinton and wife Lynn, of San Diego, CA.; great-grandchildren Trey Hamblet, Travis Hamblet, Holly Caviness, Kristen Hamblet, Claire Brand, Caroline Brand, Chester Brand, Sydne Hinton, Jacob Hinton, and Annette Hinton; great great-grandchild Haley Hamblet.
Preceded in death by her husband Hickman M. Corley in 1986; son Hickman M. Corley, Jr. in 1992; brothers John Robert Foster, Frank Foster, Lee Foster, and Downes Foster, and sisters Margaret Woodson, Alline Jones, Alice Foster, and Marion Foster.
Funeral services for Mrs. Virginia Mae “Totsy” Foster Corley were held Tuesday, April 30, at 2:00 p.m. in the Callaway-Allee Memorial Chapel with the Rev. E.P. Ramsey, Jr. officiating. Interment followed in the Evergreen Memorial Park.
Honorary Pallbearers were James Green Hamblet, Jr., Melton Glen Hamblet, James Green Hamblet, III, Travis Pate Hamblet, Roy Corley, Jr., M.V. Hargrove, Jimmy Caviness, Dan Foster, Jim Woodson, Dudley Wooden, Alfred Lee Foster, Glen Hinton, and John Wallace Woodson.
