WALTER H. (WALT) WASHINGTON JR.
Walter Harris (Walt) Washington Jr., age 52, of Austin, soared through the clouds and rain to join his Lord on August 2, 1995, in Austin, Texas.
He was born on February 3, 1943, in Nacogdoches, Texas, the son of Walter Harris Washington Sr. and Winnie Davis Emmons (Dixie) Washington. His grandparents were Stark and Julia Cade Washington and great-grandparents, Thomas Pratt and Elizabeth Tate Harris Washington.
Walt met and married Faye Bott Cason in 1974 in San Angelo, Texas, after four years on assignment as an inspector for the Texas Railroad Commission, San Angelo District. At this time Walt began one of his more difficult assignments -that of step-father of two boys, Landy Lowell Cason and Andy Lee Cason.
Walt ascended through the ranks at the Texas Railroad Commission during his thirty-plus year career serving under 18 different commissioners. Walt began working at the Commission in Austin on February 4, 1963. He worked in the San Angelo District Office from November 15, 1965 through February 1, 1975. He returned to Austin and held numerous positions until December 1, 1990, when he was assigned the position of Executive Director of the Texas Railroad Commission. Walt retired on September 30, 1993. Walt was extremely proud of the work that his employees at the Texas Railroad Commission did for the state of Texas and considered them part of his family.
Walt is survived by his wife, Othella Faye Washington; his step-son, Landy Lowell Cason and his wife, Jacklyn and their children, Landa Christine Cason and Dustin Trahan; his other step-son, Andy Lee Cason and his wife Glenda and their children, Harrison James Cason and Leigh Kathryn Cason; sister, Charlotte McLaren and her husband Jim; nephew, Kevin McLaren and his wife Linda and their children, Travis and Lindsay McLaren; sister, Sara Ruth Jackson and son; also many aunts and cousins.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Friday, August 4, 1995, in the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow at the Oakwood Cemetery, intersection of East M.L.K. Blvd. and Comal Street. The family will receive friends after the graveside services at the Haynie Chapel United Methodist Church in Garfield, Texas, located on Highway 71 East at Greenwood Drive in Garfield.
Pallbearers will be Jim Akin, Cue Boykin, Richard Buerger, Pete Edgar, Dave Howard, Rex King, Jerry Martin, and Willis Steed. Honorary pallbearers are all retirees and current employees of the Railroad Commission.
In lieu of flowers the family requests memorials be made to the Haynie Chapel United Methodist Church, P.O. Box 1128, Del Valle, Texas 78617, in memory of Walter Harris Washington, Jr. Haynie Chapel was originally established on June 27, 1839, with the assistance of Walt's forefathers.
