Walter Lauren Matthews
Walter Lauren Matthews, 85, a retired machinist, died of renal failure Wednesday, August 29, 2001, at home. Visitation is 4-9 p.m. today at Stringer Funeral Home in Crystal Spring. Services are 2 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with burial in Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church Cemetery.
Mr. Matthews was born, lived his entire life and died in the same house. He was an avid outdoorsman and especially enjoyed fox hunting, a sport he learned from his father as a boy. He was known for his foxhounds. Mr. Matthews was a former president of the Mississippi Open Fox Hunters Association and served as an officer and board member of the Mississippi Fox Hunters Association.
He had been an active judge and master of hounds in Mississippi, Louisiana, Arkansas and Alabama field trials. He was a member of Pilgrim's Rest Baptist Church and a Mason. He had a genuine love for people.
Survivors include: his wife of 64 years, Jewel; his only child, Jane Matthews Armstrong; grandchildren, Matt and Kim
Grubbs Armstrong, Jon and Judy Graves Armstrong of Crystal Springs and Webb and Louise Delaney Armstrong of Meadville.
Great-grandchildren included, Kristen, Ross, Tyler, Lauren and Justin. A brother, Truett Matthews of Bay Town, Texas and a sister, Frances Mary Tate Liptrap of Arlington Heights, Ill. and a number of nieces and nephews.
