Walter Smoke

GALVESTON -- Walter George Smoke, 84, died Saturday in St. Mary's Hospital in Galveston.

Services will be 10 a.m. Monday at J. Levy & Bro. Funeral Home, the Rev. Stuart Schadt officiating, with Masonic graveside services under the auspices of Tucker Lodge 297 at Galveston Memorial Park in Hitchcock.

Mr. Smoke was born Nov. 27, 1897. A retired clerk, he had worked for Santa Fe Railroad 58 years. He was a lifetime resident of Galveston, a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, a 60-year member of Tucker Lodge 297 AF&AM, past commander of Knights Templar, a member of the Order of Eastern Star 716 Galveston chapter, a member of El Mina Shrine and was on the advisory board for Rainbow Girls.

He is survived by a daughter and son-in-law, Betty and John Schroeder of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandchildren, Cathy Schroeder of San Francisco, Calif., and Nancy Schroeder of Baytown.

Visitors may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. today.

Pallbearers will be Moylan Steinbeck, Raymond Steinbeck, John C. Munro, C. Q. Ammann, Carl Lippold and R. A. Willis.
