WALTER M. “TOMMY” THOMASON

Walter M. “Tommy” Thomason, 87, of Ashland, Ky., died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at Heartland of Riverview in South Point, Ohio, after an extended illness.

He was retired as a tech service engineer with the Ashland Oil Company after 38 years of service. He was a veteran Merchant Mariner with the United States Coast Guard and a member of First United Methodist Church. He was associated with the Boy Scouts of America for more than 40 years, having been a member of the Lone Scout which was the original Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Tri State Area Council of the Boy Scouts. He was a member of Poage Masonic Lodge F&AM 325, a Master Mason, a member of Kentucky Grand Lodge, Ashland Commandery Knights Templar 28, Easter Star Ashland Chapter 119 and Everett Council 65.

He was born Sept. 25, 1912, in Mercer County, Ill., to the late Walter Cleveland and Ethel Audry McKnelly Thomason and was predeceased by a daughter, Tawyna Thomason, and in 1998 by his wife, Alice A. Thomason.

He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Jones of Raymond; two sons, Virgil Bruce Thomason of Baton Rouge, La., and Walter C. Thomason of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Dawn Gaudin of Baton Rouge, Donald M. Jones II of Marysville and Jonathon Michael Easton of Wilton, Conn.; a great-grandchild, Cassidy Easton of Wilton; and a nephew, Larry M. Thomason of Galesburg, Ill.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Steen Funeral Home Ashland Chapel, 1501 Central Ave., Ashland, Ky. The Rev. Dr. William M. Moore will officiate and burial will be at Rose Hill Burial Park. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where a Masonic service will be conducted at 7 p.m.
