William Hardy Mecom
William Hardy Mecom, 69,
passed away on Wednesday,
October 8, 2008 in League
City, Texas. He was born on
May 18, 1939 in Terrell, Texas
to William and Lois Mecom.
William is survived by
his loving wife of ten years
Jane, four sons, Andrew Lee
Mecom and wife Lisa, Eric
Christian Mecom and wife
Imelda, James William Atwell
and wife Linda, Jason Webster
Atwell and wife Carmen. Also
surviving are his sister Jean
Ann Mecom Hierholzer, and
his grandchildren, Alexander
Girot Mecom, Stephen Bing
Mecom, Sarah Anne Mecom,
Lindsey Claire Mecom,
Alexander William Atwell,
Adam Webster Atwell, Ian
Thomas Atwell, Allison Paige
Atwell, Ryan Charles Atwell,
Oliver William Atwell, and
Ava Kate Atwell and his
beloved cat Scarlett.
He grew up in Metairie,
Louisiana (New Orleans)
where he attended high school
and graduated from Tulane
University with a B.S. in
Business Administration. He
served his country in the US
Navy in the aviation field,
training to be a naval aviator
in Pensacola, Florida. He
was with VP16 squadron in
Jacksonville, Florida flying the
P2V. He flew reconnaissance
flights during the Cuban
missile crisis and other
missions during the Russian
build up of the Atlantic.
Later he held the position
of nuclear weapons officer
and maintenance operations
before training potential
Navy aviators in the ``new''
P3 Orion. He was comptroller
for numerous companies in
Pass Christian, Mississippi,
Bay City, Texas and Wharton,
Texas. He volunteered at the
Galveston Aviation Museum
and the Hobby Airport
Museum after retiring. Bill
was an artist and an avid
reader especially in historical
publications and aviation.
A celebration of life service
will be held Saturday, October
18, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at
Gateway Community Church,
760 Clear Lake City Blvd. in
Webster, Texas 77598 with
Mike Myers officiating.
The family request in lieu of
