FORMER CITY RESIDENT IS DEATH VICTIM

Funeral services were scheduled to be held Monday afternoon at four o'clock for Mrs. Ben F. Whittington, at LaBranch street Methodist church with the pastor, the Rev. F. E. Dement officiating.

A resident of McComb for more than 50 years, the message telling of her death which occurred in Mobile, Ala., Saturday night at 7:30 brought grief to many relatives and friends here. She was 70 years of age.

Mrs. Whittington died from injuries sustained Friday evening at about eight o'clock when she was struck by an automobile as she attempted to cross a street less than five blocks from the home of her son, Oliver Whittington, with whom the beloved lady and her invalid husband resided.

She was taken to a Mobile hospital and died without regaining consciousness.

A native of Philadelphia, Miss., the former Miss Willie Ann Bostick, she came to McComb when about 16 years of age and resided here throughout her life until she and her husband went to live in the home of the son's family in Mobile, Mr. Whittington having been ill and confined to his bed for a long period of years.

A beloved wife and mother, a kindly neighbor and friend, she was known by many of the older residents of this area as a woman of splendid traits of character. She was unassuming in manner and gave her time and labor to the comfort of her family, having faithfully cared for her invalid husband for many years. During a long period the family lived at their home here at the corner of Third and 21st streets. She was a member of the Methodist church. The body was brought to McComb Sunday and lay at Catchings Chapel awaiting funeral services.

Mrs. Whittington leaves her husband; three sons, Oliver and Earl Whittington, both of Mobile, Ala., and Leroy Whittington, Baton Rouge; four sisters, Mrs. C. B. Stevens, Hattiesburg; Mrs. A. M. Duncan, Charlotte, N.C.; Mrs. H. S. Causey, Baton Rouge, La., and Mrs. Emma Card, McComb; and two brothers, Steve M. Bostick, McComb, and Jeff Bostick, D'Lo, Miss.

Interment was scheduled to be in Hollywood cemetery with Catchings Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
