Woodrow Wilson Barber
Woodrow W. Barber, age 93, of Gulfport, passed away on Tuesday, March 6, 2012.
Mr. Barber was born in Wesson, MS on November 26, 1918 as the third youngest child of the 15 children born to his late parents, Sterling and Mary Barber. He graduated from Gallman High School and went on to spend two years as a lifeguard at the Homochitto National Park at the CC Camp. He then entered into the U.S. Army on August 2, 1944 at Camp Shelby. He served in World War II in the Bravo Company 1759th Engineer Support Ship Battalion and was deployed to the South Philippines, Luzon. He was awarded the Philippines Liberation Ribbon with one bronze star, the Good Conduct Medal, the Meritorious Unit Award and the WWII Victory Medal. He was a Sergeant.
Following his military career, he was an Independent Insurance Adjuster. He was a former member of Bethesda United Methodist Church in Crystal Springs and was currently a member of Mississippi City United Methodist Church in Gulfport. Mr. Barber was a faithful member and 32 degree Mason, while his wife Mary was a member of the Eastern Star. Mr. Barber loved the outdoors and to work in his yard.
He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers and eight sisters.
Survivors include his wife of 71 years, Mary Lou Phillips Barber; 3 children, Dorothy Louise Barber-Patterson (Michael), Ray D. Barber (Marilyn) and Dennis N. Barber (Pattie); sister, Ellen Marler of Jackson; daughter-in-law, Teresa Barber; 12 grandchildren, Deborah, Stewart, Tish, Henry Wilson, Christine, Michael, Carrie, Dennis Jr., Jennifer, Heather, Amy and Brooke; 21 great-grandchildren and 5 great-great-grandchildren.

Friends may visit the family on Saturday, March 10 from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. at the MS City United Methodist Church, 219 Courthouse Road in Gulfport. The Funeral Service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at the church. Burial with Masonic Rites and Military Honors will follow at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Gulfport.
