Woodruff Denton Key Sr.

SWAINSBORO, Ga. - Peebles- Curry-Durden Mortuary announces the death of Woodruff Denton Key, Sr., age 84, who died Tuesday, July 26, at the Swainsboro Nursing Home after an extended illness. Funeral services are Friday, July 29 at 11:00 a.m. in the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Elick Bullington and Rev. Wayne DeFore officiating. Interment will be in the Swainsboro City Cemetery with Rev. Steve Bullington officiating.

The family will receive friends at Peebles-Curry-Durden Mortuary Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m.

Pallbearers are Dennis Key, Brian Key, Hill Griffin, Tim Bagwell, Bill Bagwell, Don Adams, Stanley Key and John Whitworth. Honorary Pallbearers are members of the Swainsboro Exchange Club, the C.I. Hall Sunday School Class, the John R. Flanders Sunday School Class and members of the Citizens Bank Coffee Club.

A long time resident of Emanuel County, Mr. Key served in the Merchant Marines during World War II and was founder and co-owner of Dolores and Woody's Shops. A member of the First United Methodist Church, he served as former Chairman of the Administrative Board, Sunday School Superintendent, had served on the Finance Committee, The Board of Trustees, the Building Committee and was a former Sunday School teacher. He was a strong supporter of the Boy Scouts and received the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award given to a non-boy scout for their support. He was former member of the Emanuel County Board of Education, the Swainsboro Housing Authority, member and past-president of the Georgia Retail Association and former director of the Swainsboro branch of First Federal Savings and Loan. He was a former member of the Industrial Development Council of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, was a charter member and served as President of the Swainsboro Exchange Club and was first president of the Swainsboro/Emanuel County Chamber of Commerce.

Survivors include his wife, Helen Williams Key of Swainsboro; one daughter, Fay Key of Scott; one son and daughter-in-law, Denny and Peggy Key of Swainsboro; one sister and brother-in-law: Bertha Nell and John Bagwell of Americus; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Jack and Ruthanne Key of Dublin, and Billy and Sunshine Key of Perry; two grandchildren, Dennis Key of Statesboro and Brian and Karol Key of Swainsboro; three great-grandchildren, Lainey Key of Statesboro, and Evans Key and Etta Key of Swainsboro.
