ALLEGED INSULT TO CIRL [sic GIRL] CAUSES KILLING
Columbia, La., Sept. 12. -- Aaron Manley, a young man of the Fifth ward of Caldwell parish, is in jail here on a charge of killing S. S. Gregory, Jr., of the same ward. It appears that bad feeling had existed between the two young men for some time over an alleged insult to the pretty young sister of Manley.
Saturday morning, it is alleged, Manley and Gregory met at Riverton when the difficulty was renewed, and Gregory struck Manley with his fist. Manley then went for a gun which he seems to have had conveniently near, and was followed by Gregory, but when the latter saw that Manley had a gun Gregory turned to run away from him and as he was running Manley fired upon him, killing him instantly. Manley used a shot gun and two shots struck Gregory in the back.
The testimony of the witnesses as given before the coroner's jury showed that Gregory was running from Manley and begging him not to shoot, but that Manley's reply was that he had come there to kill him and that he was going to do it.
Manley came to town of his own accord and surrendered to the sheriff, but he refrained from making any statement as to the cause of the killing except when he stated to a prominent citizen of this town that Gregory had insulted his sister, and sought the advice of that citizen as to what he should do in the premises.
