Abstract
For more than five years, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute has used a "studio" model of instruction for the approximately 1000 engineering and science students per term taking the calculus-based introductory physics sequence. The defining characteristics of the “Studio Physics” courses at RPI are:
- An integrated lecture/laboratory/recitation class structure
- Hands-on, active-engagement learning
- Minimization of time spent lecturing
- Extensive student-student and student-faculty interaction during class time
- Effective use of technology in the classroom
We have extensively assessed student learning and satisfaction in these courses. The results of these assessments, a detailed description of the course, and an overview of the triumphs and tribulations of developing such a course will be discussed.
