Track Finding and Reconstruction in Time Projection Chambers (TPCs)

This picture of a TPC called EOS shows debris emerging from a near-head-on collision between two nuclei at the Bevalac accelerator in Berkeley, CA. In January 1996, EOS successfully took data for more energetic gold on gold collisions at the AGS accelerator at Brookhaven National Lab., NY. Physicists at the CNR are working on refining techniques used in EOS and will apply them to collisions at the much higher energy of a new accelerator due to begin operation at Brookhaven in 1999. We will use a greatly scaled-up version of EOS, known as STAR, now being constructed by a large international collaboration. While the maximum track density (relative to the pixel volume) in STAR will be lower than in EOS, simulated gold-gold collisions in STAR demonstrate the formidable challenge of tracking thousands of charged particles.
