My older sister Kathy is my Maid of Honor. Growing up with her on a 164-acre farm
in Southern Indiana was hard work.
Though I tried, she was impossible to measure up to.
Today, she is still the hardest working person I know.
There were many episodes growing up that I will never forget. For Kathy, it was her broken-necked turtle (she must have had it for 5 years) that could seize her heart. Yes, pounding the turtle's little head against the arm of the sofa would certainly get her attention. For me, it was my magical panda bear. It played a melody when you turned his little key. His name was Blackie by the way and one day, the head-banging charades sent heads rolling and stuffing flying. But it wasn't that old broken-necked |
turtle that lost its head, no- sadly, it was Blackie. So, after I dropped the dumpy turtle
and flopped to the stuffing-covered wood floor in a pile of tears, Kathy made it all better.
She solemnly gathered the bear's guts and stuffed him again. Then, with a long needle
and white thread, she sewed his head back on. It was the most hideous bear with a
wobbling head I had ever seen but, it made me happy again and even at six; I knew she loved me.
Now that we're all grown up, Kathy and I have worked, traveled, danced, cooked and among many other things, climbed mountains together. The above photo was taken after our successful second attempt to climb to the top of Superstition Mountain (a few miles from where our grandma used to live) in Apache Junction, Arizona.
