*Some source give Newsom's date of birth as 17 MAY 1858. Indeed, the 1900 census gives his birthdate as MAY 1858. He is listed as age 21 in the 1880 census but as age 9 in the 1870 census. He was not listed in the 1860 census. Thus, the earliest census records suggest that he was actually born in 1861.
