*Ucal COTTINGHAM's wife was listed as Ann in the 1850 census. An online 1891 biography of his son, James Richard COTTINGHAM, gives his mother's name as Anne PORTHAM. According to Henry Chamber's History of Northeast Louisiana, Ucal's wife was a member of the prominent PARHAM family of SC. PORTHAM appears to have been a corruption of PARHAM. Charlie COTTINGHAM's 1934 death certificate (whose informant was his daughter Laura) names his mother as Laura MAYFIELD. However, it is certain that was in error. After Ann's death, Ucal married Mrs. Clarissa MAYFIELD on 1 MAR 1860. Laura MAYFIELD was one her four children by Mr. MAYFIELD and thus was Ucal's stepdaughter, not his wife.
**Russell COTTINGHAM (listed as “nephew”) was in the household of Laura COTTINGHAM (FAHEY) in the 1930 census for Beaumont, Jefferson Co., TX. His death notice referred to him as Russell COTTINGHAM, Jr.
